Jon Reed just posted a good article about a SAP Consultant’s changed environment and skill requirements in a downturn market. Jon amalgamated some of his earlier articles from other blogs, but that doesn’t do any harm here. It’s a well-written and realistic snapshot of the current market – probably more influenced by the US side of the story, but worthwhile a read nonetheless.

November 11, 2008 at 5:13pmThanks for the kind comments about the article. I like your blog – not sure how I had missed it before! It’s now on my RSS reader so I won’t miss it again!
The only thing I want to clarify is about the content in this article. The bulk of the article is not my insights in this case but that of Ray Kelly of B2B Workforce. I actually got tired of listening to my own comments on SAP consulting in the downturn and wanted to feature someone else. 🙂
Ray’s comments originally appeared in a newsletter feature I wrote for B2B on ERP consulting in a downturn. I thought the comments were of wider importance and I had some SAP-specific stuff from Ray that I hadn’t published in that article. So, I worked that into this feature for SearchSAP. However, this SAP-specific version of the article only exists on SearchSAP.com and hasn’t been repurposed from my other pieces on consulting in a downturn. On the other hand, I do think I’m guilty of sometimes over-emphasizing the same themes. 🙂 Some find that helpful but those who “get it” probably want me to cover new terrain. Fair enough. One of the next pieces on my horizon is to write more specifically about the skills demand for the Business Suite components, something I have not done yet. I have a much older piece on SAP consulting in lean times that I wrote way back in 2001 that has disappeared from the web, at some point I may revisit that and see if there is anything to be learned from the leaner cycles of the past. 🙂
If you have anything else you want me to cover, do let me know!
Thanks again for the comment.
